ep05 — Professional Scare Actor: Ashley Young

Sidney: How would I clean when a porn set gets dirty? What should I use to build stilts that are sturdy? Where could I breed a new species of birdie? Explain like I'm thirty. Welcome, everyone, to Explain Like I'm 30. I'm your host, Sidney Raskind. Thank you so much for listening. Guess what, everyone? I have finally, finally gotten to the point of parenthood where my daughter got sick.

She has a fever, and she's had a fever for a couple days, and that is a first for me. She's nine, ten months old, I think. I think. It's my daughter. Why don't, why don't I know how old she is? She's almost 10 months old, everyone. Don't worry, relax. But, yeah, she has her first fever, so we've been dealing with that.

And let me tell you, not being able to communicate to a baby about her fever is a wild, wild experience. Because they look so cute and just not able to help themselves or you can't explain anything to them. But you just, you just want them to be cozy and comfy. She's so cute, but she is feeling better. So thank you so much for worrying.

She is feeling better. Um, I, I gotta tell you, uh, she's still the cutest daughter I've ever had for sure. And, um, I'll let her know that you wish her well. I really will. And she's not scared. Really. I don't think she's scared. I just think she's a little bit confused. But that actually gets into what we are talking about today.

The scare actor is our guest. Ashley freaking young scare actor, uh, model, dancer, a limb different actor. She's absolutely an incredible guests. We talk about what it's like to be a scare actor. What a boo hole is, We got some spoilers in this episode of some movie characters, possibly, so just as a heads up, but it is truly a fantastic episode.

I had a lot of fun talking to her. I realized in this episode that maybe I do like horror films, and that's okay, because for the past 34 years of my life, I thought I didn't like horror films, but as we were going through a very fun game, In this episode, I realized, wow, these are fun characters that maybe I do really like, but that's it.

That's the episode. She's amazing. So much fun to talk to. I can't wait for y'all to listen. So let's get into it. Ashley Young, everybody. Scare actor.

Ashley, hello. Welcome to the podcast. Thank you so much for being on it. I really appreciate this. Thanks, Sydney. Before we get into it too much, please introduce yourself. I'm a little bit scared to be talking to you because you might scare me at some point. Um, but yeah, Ashley, who, who, who

Ashley: are you? So, uh, I am Ashley Young and I'm quite a lot of things.

Uh, one of those things being an actor. Um, I'm also a mom, a model, uh, and a dancer. So I've got a lot of crazy stuff going on. Um, but yeah. character at Halloween Horror Nights was kind of my thing. So

Sidney: what type of dance do you

Ashley: dance? Yeah, I have been dancing, um, since 2006. Uh, and I've kind of done a little bit of everything.

Um, mainly like jazz, contemporary, uh, lyrical, um, but like my main focus now is mostly contemporary.

Sidney: So does it help with the scaring? Do you like very beautifully move around and sneak about using your, uh, jazz shoes and sort of like your contemporary, maybe like your ballet shoes? Like, are you just like very fluttery and moving about and that kind of thing?

And all of a sudden you're like,

Ashley: yeah, actually, um, one of my, my Most recent character from Halloween Horror Nights was a broken ballerina doll in the Revenge of Chucky So I believe I was put in that role because of my experience in dance, but it does help you because you're yeah You are on your feet and you're moving around and you can kind of do like there's different types of scares But one of the things you can do is be very still and then suddenly like go after someone if they think you're not gonna move Um, and yeah dance certainly helps with that

Sidney: Yeah, and I mean, you said broken.

You said broken Barbie,

Ashley: broken

Sidney: ballerina doll, broken ballerina doll, which is because you only have one full arm. May I say that? Is that a thing? So yes, you're waving like I, it's one of those things. So, okay, so it's a forearm down right

Ashley: elbow. Yeah, so I, I'm a congenital amputee, um, who's missing the lower half of her right arm.

Yeah.

Sidney: Yeah. And that's, that's why you play these characters. I mean, I know I saw on Instagram that you're playing these characters and I, I looked through and I was like, you're very outspoken and kind of famously, uh, talking about how, yeah, you only have the top part of your right arm. I don't know how to actually explain it.

Is it? Like, how do you explain it as an amputee? That's,

Ashley: uh, so I basically call it my little arm. Like, people, like, can call things what they want. Um, but for me, because I'm not, uh, like an amputee technically, um, I just call it my little arm or lucky fin because Nemo has one, like a small lucky fin. Um, but yeah, little, little arms like the thing for me because I just find it really cute.

Yeah,

Sidney: it's adorable. It's an adorable arm. Ashley . Thank you. It's so, like if you said cute, I was like, oh, great. Okay. Yep. It's adorable. Yeah, , definitely. Uh, well, yeah, I mean, so it's interesting too that because kind of your characters, I'm assuming are really based around like that experience, right? Like you're usually really like using it, um, to enhance these characters.

I mean, what kind of characters have you played that have been like maybe the most scary. Have you played Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles and in Florida? And then is, I mean, which, which characters were maybe your most fun to do because, because of your lucky arm, like which ones were

Ashley: they? Yeah. So, um, because of my little arm, I've been doing, I've basically been a zombie a lot, but we're not, we're not allowed to say zombies.

Zombies, we have to call them walkers because I was a walker in The Walking Dead. Um. For I think from 2013 up until 2017 actually I was in yeah in the walking dead house So not the show, uh, but I did do quite a lot of like photo shoots with uh characters from the tv show Um, but they basically had me as like the one armed zombie, uh Walker, and I also had like I also had my right eye missing as well.

So it was like a lot of dk On this side, uh, and it take took a lot of time to like get the makeup done So I did that for a long period of time and I really enjoyed it But I think that the character that I could like scare People with the most uh was probably on the street because people were able to see me better Um, I was in the scare zones on hollywood in florida.

Um, i've only worked at universal studios florida and um Basically, like, I use this a lot because people, they look at me and they're at Universal so they think everything is not real. Like, nothing is real. Um, and a lot of people will look at me and just be very confused about what's happening. Um, so what I like like to do is I like to like swing my arm like this because I can like swing it really Weirdly and people just and sometimes that's like all I have to do for people to be really terrified and like And the fact that I have an elbow also scares people too like Uh when I was the broken ballerina doll, I would stand there Uh with like one arm up and then I would just be completely still Just moving this part of the arm and like people would freak out they would run they would cover their eyes scream grab their children like And like for me, it's like a very normal thing for me to do because it's my elbow.

Uh, but yeah, it just really scared people somehow. And I think it's like my most favorite thing because it's entertaining for me as well. Uh, like trying not to laugh at people just running away from my arm.

Sidney: Well, it's because it's real and you're expecting things to not be real at Halloween. Like, at a scare event, right?

I mean, if I were to see someone in first position, and then all of a sudden lift up their arm, and then it's like, oh no, that, oh god, like, like, I feel, I felt afraid when you're describing like, slowly walking up to these people, because they're like, haha, haha, that's so funny and cute, it must be some sort of sleeve that they have, camouflaging the rest of the arm, and then all of a sudden, oh god in heaven, haha.

There's a half broken Barbie doll, a half broken ballerina coming at me and just

Ashley: freaking out. Yeah, and you cannot, you can only like, imagine the comments that people have given me, like, people will walk by, and they'll like, look behind my back, and they're like, I see it! I see your other arm! Or they'll like, or they'll like, come up to me and tell me I'm like, CGI, or...

I'm standing in a green screen, even though I'm like in the middle of the street, but like, you know, like, I don't know. They just think because it's universal, like suddenly this magical, uh, VFX kind of thing. But

Sidney: I mean, I don't think that unless you're on a ride, you can assume that anything is VFX because That's not how theme parks work.

Exactly. Especially if you're there to be scared, like you would want the people to be there to be authentic and to be very capable scare. I mean, how long? So I guess this kind of gets into some of the questions that I have, which is like your, your professional title is professional scare. They're after, right?

Yeah. Scare actor. There you go. And then, I mean, how do you get to this point of your job? Like, or how do you even get this job? What is. Dude, were you, were you one day you were like, fuck everyone, pointing out this thing that obviously I live with every day. I hate, like, this is not cool. So how about, I just.

Ashley: Yeah, well, actually, this is an interesting story how I got into it. So my mom is an Orlando native. She was born in Orlando, grew up. She's lived here her whole life. And, um, I have also lived here, you know, a good, good amount of time. Um, but so. I was a dancer performer, uh, growing up in high school. And then when I turned 18, um, my mom had said to me, and I have a twin sister as well, and said, um, she was like, I signed you guys up for an audition.

We were like, really? Like for me, I was thinking, I was thinking it was dance or something. Um, and then all of a sudden she was like, yeah, it's for Universal Halloween Horror Nights. And we were just like, well, firstly, we were amazed because we had been going to Halloween Horror Nights since I think. Gosh, we were like 11 years old.

Our first year was actually 2006. Um, and yeah, my mom had been going for a really long time and she brought us when we were really little and we were like those crazy super fans who had frequent fear passes every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, you would see us at the event. Um, some of the characters like knew our names because we went so frequently and

Sidney: um, wait, so the walkers, the walkers were walking around being like.

Hey, Ashley, like, like freaking out, like trying to scare everybody. You're just like, how's your wife?

Ashley: Well, it was so funny because we were like, because we're like children, right? The, there's this one guy, his name is Dennis. And it's funny because like, once we got the job there, He remembered us and like introduced himself to us as a human non scare actor.

Cool. But he's like, he was like a dude that was always in the chainsaw squad. Like, and he would just like, I don't know, he would laugh at us when we walk the street, like way, you know, like they were, they're not allowed to talk to you. Um, and so he just knew, he just knew us. And then, um, yeah, yeah. So, uh, gosh, we were there all the time, but.

Uh, as soon as we auditioned for it, my sister and I ended up getting, uh, roles straight away. So the audition process, yeah, you go in and basically they already have all of their roles kind of in mind. Um, and it's mostly like who. You look like typecast, like what, what you look most like, um, if you're the right height for it, they ask you whether or not you want to shave your head, um, they ask all these like, yeah, crazy questions.

You have to go through fitness, uh, evaluations for some rules and stuff, but. Yeah, we just went to the audition, got asked one single question. Every audition you go in a line and they say like, what's your favorite scary movie? What's your favorite Halloween candy? Um, if you're a veteran scare actor, then they'll ask you what your favorite role was.

Um, so yeah, so it's really, it's pretty simple. It's just like a type casting, but again, this is for Orlando. So

Sidney: well, yeah, right. Um, it's interesting that you said type casting. So what, so you got, you had the broken ballerina right away or was that not what you got right away?

Ashley: Well, so that in 2013 there's different themes for every single year at Halloween Horror Nights.

So. Uh, you'll have either a main icon or not. Um, and there's like a general theme. They've got all the houses lined up already by the time you go into audition. And, um, in 2013, they had the walking dead throughout the entire park. So they had their main house and then they had all of their scare zones in the streets where the walking dead as well.

And so I was cast as a walker on the street. Um, and I had a giant like pole going through me, uh, and this was from a scene in the walking dead called the clear. And it basically was this guy's house. Um, and he had like, uh, Walker traps everywhere. And I was basically like, uh, Yeah, I guess I had a stick going through me, which was very interesting trying to walk through doors, uh, after my shift, but yeah, sure, but yeah, so I was cast 2013 as a walker, 2014 as a walker, 2015 as a walker, 2016 as a walker, and then, uh, you know, it was kind of like that thing that no one thought would ever end, the Walking Dead every single year, everyone was like, Oh, no, they're like, Walking Dead announcement, And in 2016, because I had been doing The Walking Dead for such a long time, I actually won Scarer of the year for the entire park of Universal, uh, what all, all the characters.

Yeah. Um, because I was like, I think everyone just felt bad that I put up with being diagnosed as a walker for such a long time. Um, oh man. But then in 26, 17. Uh, I was put on the street in a scare zone called festival of the deadliest. Um, which was super cool. It was like heavy metal. Uh, it was an original scare zone, which I think people really loved.

And I was like a bone, a bone minion. And then, then following year, that was the ballerina. So we're in revenge of Chucky.

Sidney: Now what is your sister type cast as is she still a scare actor as well?

Ashley: Um, she's not a scare actor anymore, but. My sister, um, she was a walker in The Walking Dead, uh, in 2013, like most of us were.

And then she ended up being, so, my, my sister, I love her to death, she's like, hot blonde, like, just really like, her like typecast is like, uh, Gosh, tight clothes,

Sidney: but she is, is she the person that's like running away from the walkers? Like the person that's like, save me, save me. Don't run in

Ashley: here. No, no.

She's like the like hot, uh, scary person. Yeah. Zombie. Well, yeah, yeah, I mean she she kind of was she was a zombie the first year and the second year She was in the purge. So she had on like these cool outfits. Um This is where I was jealous Right because she like always had a cool outfits with like the the scary masks and stuff But everything else looks super cool.

She was like sporting a baseball bat and a machete and stuff and uh She was also in the house called Run, which is another original Halloween Horror Nights house as a, um, chainsaw Canadian. So

Sidney: sure. Yeah. I mean, as you do. Yeah, that's totally normal. This is, um, you, you really are describing my nightmare. I never go to scary things because I'm very susceptible to fear.

Okay. Um, and even watching scary movies, I'm like, you know, I could just not, I could also just watch like, um, a nice movie with, uh, lights and stuff and not be scared, you know, that's also content, you know, horror, horror is not the only type of content out there, but apparently I'm missing a lot, um, I don't mind it, you know, being spooked to me is something that is a choice, I agree, and, uh, You know, and it takes a lot.

I think it would take a lot for me to really walk into, uh, especially something like universal and be like, yeah, let's fucking do it. Like I saw a tick tock actually last year where, um, Jack, I think like, or, or the, the Jack in the box like came out and it was really cool to see on tick tock. If I had, if I had, if I'd been there, I would have just walked away.

I would have been like, well, sorry, you can have my money, but I'm walking away from this. Um, so. So I don't I have you always liked horror movies like is that is that a big thing for you? Uh,

Ashley: yeah, so I feel like the people the people who go to these events are very specific people, you know Like it is true a lot of them though.

Yeah No, it's like a it's weird because it's like a spooky little family Like once you get into the horror community, like people really take care of you, you know we all just have this like one thing in common, but my mom It is a horror fan and she, she didn't make this, but she turned on it, the original one day when I was like six years old, I don't even know.

And it was

Sidney: terrifying. It was, uh, it was actually live on Fox and, uh, it airs a two part special and it ruined me. Well,

Ashley: there you go. See, we just branched off into like, into

Sidney: like two different things. We have very different timeline experiences. We both, we both saw it when we were about six, and we just didn't, didn't have the same experience.

Like, I couldn't go near drains. Like I couldn't do it.

Ashley: Exactly. Exactly. Well, yeah, I don't know, cause like, once she showed me that, then like, it was scary, but it also like, I was like wanting to know more, which is a bit morbid for like, a six year old, but, but it was interesting. But yeah, like the type of people who go, they're very, they like live this hardcore lifestyle.

So,

Sidney: well, I think, I think that's interesting because for me. I didn't know what was fake until much later in life, right? So, like, when I watched The Babadook when I was in my twenties, late twenties, right? I watched that and like, okay, there are some funny moments in it and ha ha ha, you know, whatever. Oh, and there's actually a very heartfelt meaning of grief and everything at the very end of the movie and stuff.

Sorry, spoilers. But, um. Uh, but at the same time, if I had seen that when I was younger, I would have been like, Oh, this is it. Like, this is the end. Like, actually, and I watched interview with a vampire, right interview with a vampire. I watched for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I want to say, like, less than a year ago, for sure.

Okay. Um, and there's this moment. Have you seen it? I'm assuming

Ashley: you have, uh, I've seen bits and pieces. Actually, it was like one of those things that was playing in the background, but go for it. There's this

Sidney: really, this really spoopy moment. Um, where Tom Cruise comes up out of the water and he's completely burned up to a crisp and all of this stuff and he comes out of the swamp and it's like, ah, you know, and I remember thinking in my head, like, oh, if I had seen this when I was a kid, this would have ruined me.

I would have been done, but now it's a little bit easier. So I think, I think there's something to be said for maybe rewatching horror films. Um, cause I, I didn't know it was fake back then, but you're saying that you were like, oh, this is. This is it. This is like fun

Ashley: for me. Yeah, well actually that's interesting that you bring that up because my mom every time we would watch something scary She would say just remember it's fake and like the first thing.

Yeah, and like as a kid, you're like, okay You know, it like looks real you're like really into it But I think her just continually telling me that especially when we when we went to halloween horror nights for the first time I remember my first house I went in was called psycho scarify and it was uh in 2006 And like my mom was like Every before we went in she had this like pet talk with us.

My mom's just like got her drink in her hand She's like ready to go She's like we bought tickets and we're gonna go in the houses. Everything is fake Uh, just keep like keep that in your head and like yeah, I just remember being in line My heart was like beating out of my chest. I was like i'm gonna have a heart attack I was like, this is really scary.

Sidney: I remember one of the first times I ever went into a haunted house or like a horror house was in Richmond, Virginia, and I was probably 23 or 25. I was definitely in my 20s. I was absolutely horrified, but I remember I remember so specifically my buddy Ricky right in front and like we're all walking through and they're like being scared but it's like like it's all like very scary but they're having a good time.

Yeah, I think that to me like thinking about it now like thinking about it like it's just it's such a fun time because like it's such a crazy experience to have like, you know, a Broken ballerina walk towards you'd be like, Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And then just be able to walk away. And then all of a sudden there's a guy with a chainsaw chasing you.

You're like, no, no, no, no. And then just keep on doing that throughout the entire experience. And then you have the story afterwards with your friends. You're like, and like, you can, I don't know if you can, I know that you can see this, but for the listeners, I don't know if you could hear my voice by fear.

I'm sweating so much even thinking about this.

Ashley: Oh my God. Okay. Well, firstly, I want to say that like going to a haunted house in Virginia somehow just seems much scarier than any other experience. You know what I mean? Like Richmond, you said Richmond, right? I feel like one of the haunted houses there are like notorious for being really intense.

So good job to you because that is, that's like a scary thing. So I, I understand more of your, of your mindset now.

Sidney: Well, we also had to go, the other thing about Virginia, especially in Richmond, it's like you leave the city and then you just drive into the forest and then you're just supposed to go park your car near this place with flashing lights and a line.

And I think it's a double wide trailer maybe. And you're just like signing a waiver. Yeah. And all of a sudden it's like, you should be fine.

Ashley: Like exactly. I like, as soon as you get out of your car, you're like, is this the experience? Is it starting now? Right. I'm like really freaked out already. I mean,

Sidney: yeah, exactly.

Um, well I did, I do really want to ask you like, you know. I don't know what, what are some of those like sort of weird inside baseball like things that you only know about because you've been in the game so long. I mean, you talked about sort of like the community and, um, some of the other like, uh, jobs that you would maybe have as like a, is there like a lead scarer, like in monsters, like in monsters?

Ink or does it go down? what are some of those like terms that you would only know like if I walk in if I walk like if I walk into a Universal horror nights and I say don't skibbleboosh me like what like what is Is there like a secret code that I would know like? Like oh, yeah, classic makeup took five hours or something like that.

Yeah

Ashley: Okay, so I guess if we if we get into like levels of uh scare actors So I feel like most of us are like on the same level, right? There's like you're a scare actor Uh, you're placed in a street or you're placed in a house It's kind of like based on luck and where they put you and what character that you like look most like um, but then there's like people categorized as like Actor a that's like a thing where everyone's like, oh i'm actor a uh, Firstly firstly, it's like a page um, uh, and secondly, it's because they have like speaking lines Uh, and they have a mic and stuff.

Um, so that would be kind of like step up Uh, and then you've got stilt walkers and which are pretty Flipping cool. I have to say they're like, yeah, the stilt walkers go in their outfits and stuff and they obviously have um, Like another page but they're they're they're like the coolest characters like everyone walks in they're like, oh my gosh, it's the stilts and um, I'm, like the chain the chainsaw people are pretty cool, too.

I would say They're mostly all the same people, um, every year, uh, but they're like, they're like little group and they all love it. And like the casting directors know that they're like good at this and that they can do it. Um, or they have to go through the fitness test. Those are the people who have to like go in and do these, like, uh, I wouldn't, I wouldn't say crazy activities, but they just have to do like general fitness and health evaluations to make sure that they can hold this thing all night.

Um, Which is, yeah, pretty cool. I mean, the chainsaw people, everyone's like trying to be them. So that's the thing.

Sidney: The chainsaw people is like, that's, that's what, I mean, it sounds like the chainsaw people. That's the, that's the scary people. When I think about like a Halloween horror night or like something like that's what you always think about.

Like the chainsaw person chasing you. Yeah. And like. Like that, that to me, and it's also universal. So you have all the big hitters too, right? You have Jason, you have Freddie, you have all of them. Is there like a specific area where you're like, ah, Craig, man, he's a great Jason, you know, or like something like

Ashley: that?

Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, I, I used to, well, I knew quite a lot of people there. So like, if you see a guy and he's like six foot five and like thick with muscle, you're like. That guy is going to be leather face, you know, like, yeah, but, um, a funny story actually, uh, about being like behind the scenes.

Um, I actually got asked out on a date by a guy in a full predator costume from alien versus like, we had been like talking before and like, he didn't even take his mask off and he was just like, so you want to get like dinner after this is something I was like. This is like, if you didn't know, you know, this is like a very, very weird thing.

Were you also in full makeup? Yeah. Full zombie makeup. Yeah. At that point. Um, and I'm not like, I don't know. I just think some of the things behind the scenes are hilarious to me. Cause like, um, of course there's like a bunch of different IPS. And so like one time, um, I used to be called in for a lot of the special events, like news filming and, and like, yeah, a lot of news events, uh, somehow and like photo shoots and stuff just cause one armed zombies are cool.

Uh, but like we were all sitting behind the scenes, like waiting for the news, everyone at 3am, there was like. Jason, Freddie, me as a, as a, as a walker, like other, like a witch, everyone's just like sitting at the city. We're all sitting in the break room and I'm like, Oh, did you try that donut? He's like, yeah, it was great.

I'm like, yeah, but like full costume and makeup, like, like

Sidney: someone like me just opens up that door and goes, well, I'm in hell. All right. Exactly.

Ashley: Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And like, uh, what I think the funniest thing ever was, um, uh, us as the walking dead, we were all huge fans of the TV show as well. And like, you know, the show, uh, so have you seen the walking dead obviously?

Yeah. Okay. So like that crazy episode. With um, Megan and the bat, you know, uh, so like we were all we all got off shift and we ran all of us full walker gear running to the break room to watch the walking dead and it's a bunch of walkers sitting here watching the walking dead in the break room and like all these people were walking by like laughing at us because we're just there like Like freaking out, you know, we were trying to figure out what was happening next, but it was hilarious.

Like just all these, all these like silly things,

Sidney: um, I could just imagine, I mean, 15 walkers in real life running, which is actually in the, the, the real show at movies and stuff. And then just sitting down and just being like,

Ashley: Watching the TV, yeah,

Sidney: you know, I knew, I knew him when he was alive, interesting.

Just watch it up. Look at it. I just imagined at a break room. It's like a 24 inch TV on the wall up really high and you're just like, Megan did what?

Ashley: Like literally,

Sidney: absolutely. I mean, I remember like watching it like, you know, and, and. Being a human and I don't even know what it would be like Oh

Ashley: my god, it was hilarious.

And really I like eating salads and like hot dogs. And so we're just like chilling out like Um, but I was gonna say like as far as terminology, uh, if you came into universal and you said to someone If you, the blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, boo holes, you know what a boo hole is? What, what, a

Sidney: boo hole? Yeah. Wait, B O O H O L E or B O O H O L

Ashley: D?

No, no, the first one. Okay. Yeah.

Sidney: What is that?

Ashley: So when, so when you're in a house, uh, and if you go through a haunted house, you see people coming out of a place. And then going back. Oh, yeah. Yeah, we call that boo holes. And so like all of us have our like assigned boo hole Uh, and like every 45 minutes, we'll like switch out characters.

We'll be the same character, but with another person um, but that's like a thing that I just think is funny because everyone's like Oh, yeah, today in the boo hole, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah happening. And like, it's just, it's just a really funny piece of terminology that like only scare actors would know.

So there you

Sidney: go. I mean, I know what I know. I remember thinking about, you know, that one time I went into a haunted house and yeah, that's a boo hole because you, you sneak out and go boo. Exactly. Yeah. And then you change around and all of a sudden you're in different or or my one of the craziest things about boo holes is that now that I know that term is that certain scare actors will basically go from.

Uh, boo hole to boo hole to boo hole and just like follow you throughout and, um, that's horrifying. Yeah.

Ashley: Well, once you target, like if you scare someone and you know that they're easily scared, you just continue to get the gratification of scaring them. So you like target them in the house and you just keep going with them until

Sidney: you, that is.

Me. You're talking about me here, Asher, like, like, like you're, you are getting gratification just looking at me. Yes. Just, just, oh, no! Um, alright, well, we're gonna take a quick break, we'll be right back with more of The Amazing. Ashley,

Okay. Let's just admit

Ashley: it. It's true. And you know what, now that you've brought that up, I would target you in a house for sure.

Sidney: I, uh, am sweating. Thank you. Um, well on that topic though, I, we, we were talking about scary characters. We were talking about you having a cup of coffee with Jason while Freddy Krueger is talking to predator.

Um, And, uh, by the way, I mean, did you end up going on that date with the predator? I mean, was that like,

Ashley: no, I was in a relationship with one of the chainsaw guys. So, oh, really? Yeah. So, I mean,

Sidney: that's pretty, that's pretty cool. Like you, I mean, you're like the most popular person at school going on a date with a chainsaw guy.

So that's pretty cool. I know. Right. Are there, are there multiple types of chainsaw people? Um, no, this is usually well, or is it all usually just one guy?

Ashley: Well, gosh, there's like different types and there's even women, uh, as part of like the chainsaw group, but they're all like, they're like pretty muscly.

Um, and then you have like chainsaw people in the houses too. So yeah, it just, just depends on what kind of chainsaw guy or girl that you want. So, well, you,

Sidney: again, we were talking about the different characters and all of that stuff and we are going to play a game. Okay. And it's going to be a tournament of the 16 scariest characters.

Ashley: Oh, exciting.

Sidney: Okay, so, uh, my amazing friend and producer Rob is going to share his screen as we see now. And we are going to do a tournament. Oh no, this is... Love it. Also my nightmare. Are you... Okay, so, matchup number one. Let's just, let's just jump right in. Okay, matchup number one is Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.

Versus Jigsaw from Saw. I don't actually know which one is the scariest for me, but which one do you, would you say is the scariest?

Ashley: I think it's it's a hard match. I feel like an american psycho because he's just like a standard guy It already makes him scary because like you don't super know what he's up to uh, but jigsaw has a Like special place in my heart for being really terrifying because he's so small, but he's so dangerous You know what?

I mean? Like he's like And like he's he's almost faceless, you know, which makes it even worse because you're like gosh Who is it and why is he trying to kill me? You know what I mean? Like I just feel like I want to go with jigsaw because he's like iconic scary man, you know Yeah

Sidney: That is interesting. I think that if I were to choose looking at that, so the picture of that we see of Patrick Bateman is a particularly terrifying one where he's chasing the woman, I believe, down the hall and like chasing her and like gonna murder her, which is, which is definitely a terrifying part of the movie.

Um, but I kind of found that movie not as scary as Saw. And when I first saw, I love, I love saying this sentence and I have always loved saying this sentence. When I first saw Saw, I was like, this is definitely new. And then, and then, and then for the rest of time you get to say things like, oh, have you seen Saw 2?

Yeah, yeah. Oh yeah, I saw Saw. I saw Saw 2. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. One of my favorite things that's ever come out of horror is that sentence. Um, okay. So. Absolutely. Matchup number one. We're going with Jigsaw

Ashley: all the way for sure.

Sidney: Okay, so next. Ooh, I love it. Okay, so I have actually not seen one of these movies from the menu.

Um, no. So matchup number two, we have Dr. Hannibal Lecter and. Versus Seth Julian Slowick from the menu. I assume that's how you say his name. Um, played by the amazing Ralph Fiennes, who is also Lord Voldemort. Um, and yeah, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, right? I mean. Which one is more terrifying to you? I think I have one because I have only seen one of these movies.

I

Ashley: think Hannibal Lecter, for sure, because I have seen the menu. And although I loved it, I felt like he wasn't really doing the dirty work. You know, like he had all he had all of his minions. Uh, his sous chefs, they did all the work for him most of the time. So like Hannibal Lecter, he's like a classic and I feel like we have to go with him.

There's no, he's like, you can't match up.

Sidney: Yeah. I think I would, I would say as well, like, uh, silence of the lambs. Man, even talking about horror movies, sometimes I like catch myself saying like, Oh, I really like silence of the lamp. So like maybe I should give horror another try. Absolutely. But yeah. Okay.

So between these two, we're going to go with Hannibal Lecter for sure. He's definitely more terrifying. Also that like thriller element where you never really know. Yeah. Okay. So matchup number three. We have Jack from The Shining, again, classic. Or Ghostface from Scream. Yeah, so. Calls his victims, calls his victims on the phone.

Um, you know, and then Jack, Jack is just trying to be on vacation, everybody. I think, I think it's tough. It's tough being a dad with a new job trying to write a book. You know, I've been there. Um, so who do you think? Ghostface or Jack from The Shining? So

Ashley: like, I am just a sucker for old horror films. I feel like Jack.

Yeah. He's like, I don't know ghost face. He's got a he's got a knife and that's it But like I feel like jack. Yeah, he he like takes you in. He like tries to suck you into his Into his mind, I feel like and so I think that's more terrifying. It's a bit It's a bit more real because he's very unpredictable and like the scene in the uh, Gosh, this is called the maze.

That was like, oh, yeah when I was a kid Yeah, my heart was like pounding when I was like, you know, i'm like they're gonna be found Are they not like is he gonna die? Yeah So I'm Jack all the way for

Sidney: sure. Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with Jack as well because I think that that that's a really also a really good movie.

Yeah, just in general and it is pretty terrifying. You

Ashley: love horror films. I'm not buying it.

Sidney: Maybe actually now that you're like Ed. Okay, so I haven't seen either of these movies. You haven't? Now. No, I haven't. Uh, so we have matchup number four. Is, uh, Chucky and Megan the new classic. Horror flick that is sweeping the horror world.

I assume I'm it. Do people like it? Is it a good one? Yeah,

Ashley: people like it. Although it's more like, uh, I thought, well, I found it more to be a comedy in my opinion. Oh, sure. Oh, like it was funny. It was a horror, but it was also funny. So I feel like yeah. I think Chucky is a special place in my heart because he was my boss at one point.

Uh, really well like Yeah, so he was a ballerina he was my leader, um, and I just think Chucky's was scary because again, I feel like I feel like there's such a nostalgic thing about old, old horror films because I was younger. Cause it was like, I don't know. It was a bit more mystical to me. So I feel like Chucky all the way.

He's a bit more intense in my opinion. He like, doesn't care about your opinions. He just wants to kill everyone. So

Sidney: yeah. So Chucky, so the description about under him is Chucky from Chucky, a vicious serial killer who is, as he bleeds out from a gunshot wound, transfer his soul into the goat. Good guy doll.

Oh, that's how it happened. Yeah. Oh, interesting. Interesting. That's horrifying. All right. So yeah, definitely Chucky. Yeah, for sure. Sorry, Megan. I've only also seen one of these movies catch up number five between. Uh, the bad guy from No Country for Old Men or Jason. I think I know what you're going to say for this one, Ashley, because you've been such a classic, a staunch classic for the entire game.

I

Ashley: know. To be fair, I've not seen No Country for Old Men, so it would have to be Jason. I love Jason. Yeah. He's my guy. So.

Sidney: Jason, yeah, was he also your boss at one

Ashley: point? No, no, I never worked for Jus . No, no, no. .

Sidney: I love that you have that ability to be like, well, I've never worked with Jason, so, yeah. But he's a nice guy, I'm assuming.

Well, yeah, I'm sorry.

Ashley: So that's, I know a few of them, but Yeah. Makes sense. .

Sidney: Uh, alright, so Jason, I think also Jason is just like such a classic. Yeah. Like you have to go with Jason. Oh, this is a really good one. Matchup number six are two different families. The Graham family from Heredity, or the Armitage family from Get Out.

Now, I have also only seen Get Out, which was a great movie. Okay. I was, at the end of that movie, I was on my feet, like, cheering. It was the best feeling. Yeah. So maybe I do like, man, Ashley, do I like

Ashley: horror? You do. I'm just saying, like, everything you've said has just convinced me that you're a fan, so.

Sidney: So, which one, which family do you think is scarier?

Ashley: I think the family from get out. I've seen both of these movies. I liked hereditary, but I Like, I don't know the whole family wasn't in on it, you know, I feel like yeah, I feel like the family from get out They were all like they were all in on in on it. So

Sidney: yeah That's what I think too. I think, yeah, I mean, one of the most, one of the scariest moments of the movie was when she was separating the Cheerios and you're just like, Oh God, like, this is really not good.

Everyone. Exactly. All right. So we got to get out wins yet. Shout out. Um, all right. So this is a great one. I have definitely seen, uh, Monty Python. I actually have never seen Pan's Labyrinth, everybody. Oh, come on. I'm so sorry. Is it, is it? I assume it's good. Yeah. Everyone always talks about it. Uh, which, so the bunny from, um, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is a terrifying bunny, by the way, or the pale man from Pan's Labyrinth, which is your classic hands over the eyes.

This is where my eyes are, and I will always know that scene, even though I've

Ashley: never seen it. Yeah. Well, I just don't find Monty Python. Well, okay, so Monty Python could be considered a horror film, depending on how you look at it. The rabbit was scary, but. I gotta go with the Pale Man, for sure, because when I saw that movie, it terrified me.

Sidney: Was Pan's Labyrinth a horror movie? I thought it was just like a mystical thing. Well, it is mystical,

Ashley: but like, that specific character, it's terrifying. Like, I don't know, the bunny was like, meh, but... Yeah.

Sidney: Yeah. And the reason what, so I know for me, the reason why Monty Python could be considered a horror film is because, um, of the absolution of Christianity overtaking all of religion and really destroying humanity as we know it.

But what, what, I mean, what, what's your reason? Well,

Ashley: I don't know. I just found it really unsettling. The whole film. Really? It was, I was really scary. Uh, my whole life, too, and working at Halloween Horror Nights, every time people see me with one arm, they go, tis but a scratch, and I'm like, yeah, okay, keep moving, uh, not that that makes it a horror film, but, you know, just, it's a famous line.

Yeah,

Sidney: exactly. Oh, gosh. Yeah, that's just so I completely understand where you're coming from on that one, because I would hate that movie too. I get it. Exactly. So we're going to go, we're going to go with the pale man on this one. All right. All right. Matchup number eight. Okay. So you talked to him. Okay.

Sorry. I got, um, There's a picture of It with It's scary teeth out looking at me right now, um, and in the matchup it's the It clown versus Barney. Holy crap this is terrifying me. So who's scarier, Barney or It?

Ashley: Well, personally, I gotta, I gotta say, you should be lucky they didn't put the original Pennywise in that photo.

Sidney: This is the Skarsgård Pennywise.

Ashley: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would, I, I'm going to say it, sorry, Barney, I, I understand. Interesting story about Universal. Uh, they have Barney's Adventureland there. And, um, when you walk behind the scenes, you can see his like face. Like his, like whole first seat, uh, just there. And I would say that it is terrifying to see at night Pennywise.

Wow. Yeah. Gonna go with Pennywise. Um,

Sidney: so for sure. I mean, and also I think, I think too that Pennywise is like a very iconic, scary figure, right? Yeah. Like everyone's scared of clowns. I feel like there's always a bloody clown at something like Halloween Horror Nights, there's always a clown chasing you because that's like what you're gonna go with.

So, okay. So Pennywise wins also. Barney was never scary to me. It was always just like, uh... Because we grew up around the same time. So Barney was just Barney to me. Yeah. Like, I don't know. I

Ashley: love you. You love me or whatever. So, you know.

Sidney: I still sing. I still sing. Um, Barney actually taught me the alphabet we were in Hebrew oh, hell yeah, Barney knows Hebrew, guys.

Ashley: That's incredible. I love

Sidney: that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so it's like, I'll lift that, that, oh my god, Bernie, you know, um, quarter, final, this is, I feel like this is going to get more interesting, because these, these, because now we have, like, all the classic characters, right? Yeah, you're right,

Ashley: yeah.

Sidney: Hannibal Lecter vs.

Jigsaw. Hmm. That's hard.

Ashley: That's tough. It's, it's tough. Right? So like, I feel like that has to come down on who has killed more people. You know what I mean? Yeah. And I feel like Jigsaw has, but Hannibal Lecter is such like a interesting, he's such an interesting person, you know, like

Sidney: he's very, I don't know.

So there's a, it's interesting to think about it too, because we don't actually know what Hannibal Lecter did besides. What we've learned, I guess, right? Exactly. If we're taking like just the movie Silence of the Lambs Not like all of the other like, what is it? Yeah, like yeah, it's like dragon like all of those like things like prequels and all that stuff Yeah, so but in Jigsaw, Jigsaw is kind of like Wow.

Now I'm thinking about it. Jigsaw is kind of like a super killer and like anyone can adopt anyone can adopt Jigsaw. So Jigsaw could kill so many people and comes up with so many games and like tests and everything like that. So And it's just, like, faceless again, and you're like, oh my god, this little tricycle's coming around the corner, and like, I feel like

Ashley: I gotta go with Jigsaw, I can't lie.

Sidney: Yeah, cause I kind of, cause you also kind of, like, respect Hannibal Lecter? Yes,

Ashley: exactly. Is that a weird thing? No, no, you do. Because like in the movie, he's like talking to you almost in like a sane kind of way. You know like, and like respecting you as well. So, I don't know, I feel like Jigsaw, you can never cross that line.

Like, you know, you like can't get to that side of him. But Hannibal, you can, so. Makes Jigsaw scarier.

Sidney: Jigsaw, Jigsaw scarier. Alright, so next up we got Chucky from Chucky and we got Jack Torrance from The Shining. Wow, this is wild. I've never, I've never done this kind of thought experiment, like, it's scarier.

This is

Ashley: crazy. I know. I feel like for me, it's going to be Chucky because as much as Jack is like a scary character, I feel like Chucky is almost, you feel like he's everywhere. You know what I mean? Like, because, because if you see all the good guy dolls, any one of them could be Chucky, which makes it more suspenseful.

And he's like, yeah, yeah, He's like intense in the way where he doesn't really give up, you know, like if he's trying to kill you He's gonna try and kill you. You know what I mean? So like he's

Sidney: a lot harder to kill.

Ashley: Yeah. Yeah. He's a doll

Sidney: Yeah, he's a doll yeah, um I will agree with you because jack anytime i'm in A big hotel.

I get scared of Jack, but anytime I'm in a toy store Yeah. I get, which are way easier to find . Exactly. I I get scared of Chucky. So Yeah, let's go with Chucky. So, so far we, we, we've picked the two cutest. I know , uh, of the scaries,

Ashley: although I wouldn't call ch, I wouldn't call Chucky cute. But, you know, ,

Sidney: he's, but he, he's cute enough.

He's cute before. He's a serial

Ashley: killer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right.

Sidney: You're right. You know. Um, man. All right. I think I know which one you're going to go with on this one, but Jason from Friday versus the Armitage family from get out

Ashley: Jason.

Sidney: Yeah, Jason. Yeah, I would say because again, Jason is sort of like that faceless character.

Yeah, that like anyone can be Jason. Exactly. Man, although He just people are scary. Let's

Ashley: be honest. Like, I mean, yeah, you're right. Yeah. Oh man. It is true. But Jason, yeah. Jason all the way.

Sidney: Okay. Now back to the scary picture. Okay. Um, so are you, okay. So we have the pale man from pan's labyrinth versus it from it.

Uh, Pennywise the classic. Yeah. Um, I'm, I'm going to say Pennywise.

Ashley: I will too, because He started it all for me, so Pennywise, we gotta go for it. Pennywise

Sidney: wins. Alright, let's, let's just keep looking at Pennywise. Great, this is fun for me.

Ashley: He should, he should switch it to the, uh, Tim Curry one.

Sidney: No, he shouldn't, Rob.

No, he shouldn't.

Ashley: Alright, fair enough, fair enough.

Sidney: No, he shouldn't. Rob, Rob, you son of a bitch. Alright, um. Well, yeah, it's funny too that we've all, we've also like kind of chosen the makeup, the,

Ashley: you know,

Sidney: the cute character or the, you know, the serial killer, um,

Ashley: I think it's interesting because like, like, uh, a person who is like a serial killer in a movie versus like a made up character, I think the character type of, uh, villains are scarier to me because like, I don't know, I see people every day and that's, yeah.

Fine. Like, obviously, I don't know what people are. They could be serial killers or not. Uh, you know, people who like encounter at the grocery store, but like humans in themselves, they don't terrify me. But like things without, I don't know. Yeah. You know what I'm talking about? Just faces.

Sidney: Yeah. I mean, I, I think, I think that's why get out was so scary though, because Jason Bateman too, right?

Like, that's why, because literally any, you know, anyone can be those characters, but sort of when you get into like the, clown makeup and the joker and yeah, um, those sort of like, like, it's sort of You sort of know that they're scary because they look scary, and then they start acting scary, so then, like, uh, feeds your anxieties of like, oh, this is scary.

Ashley: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that makes sense. Yeah.

Sidney: Uh, man, wow. Now we're, now we're getting into, like, really crazy territory. Okay, so, we got the semifinals now. Oh, man. Alright. I actually don't know about this one. Chucky versus Jigsaw. This is hard. Yeah,

Ashley: I was gonna say, I'm interested to know your thoughts about

Sidney: this.

Well, I feel, uh, very honored that you are interested to hear my thoughts on this. I feel kind of... Bad, because I've seen Saw, I have not seen Child's Play.

Ashley: Oh, right.

Sidney: So, I, but I like mystic things, and I think that's kind of cool. Yeah, okay. Is it like a talisman, or is it just like a prayer? Like, what happens?

How does that

Ashley: work? How does he turn into the, uh, so gosh, what's saying it's like, uh, I do something Dambula, right? And he like, does this, like he does this chant. I should know it because we used to say it four times a night. Uh, but like this chant happens, there's lightning and everything. And then he gets, um, into this body.

I like the good guy. I feel like as much as I love Chucky. I feel like jigsaw. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say

Sidney: that too. Yeah, I was gonna say that too because i'm like He's so spooky. Yeah, like and can you like can you? Well, you probably can't imagine because you work as a scare actor, but can you imagine just waking up and all of a sudden, I want to play a game?

Yeah. Oh no.

Ashley: Like exactly. And that's like everyone's nightmare, right? Like everyone, they go to the bar and they're like stressed out. Obviously no one wants to be like taken or anything, but like, you know, it's like almost like saw is in your head all the time. So like if I pass out right now from drinking too much, I could end up there.

Yeah. But never am I like, Oh, Chuckie's going to show up. You know what I mean? So yeah,

Sidney: it makes sense. It's such an iconic like line of like, Let's play a game. Yeah. Oh God. No. Uh, no, I don't want to play a game. No. Uh, all right. And then we got, man, I, I think, you know, it's funny. I think I know where we're going to go with this one too.

Uh, Jason versus Pennywise. Yeah. I'm going to go with Pennywise cause I can't stop being scared of him.

Ashley: I will too because you know, Jason, I think he was a bit misunderstood though. Yeah. Pennywise, he's just kind of in it to kill people. You know what I mean? But Jason, he's got like. He's got like a backstory, so yeah,

Sidney: yeah, yeah, you're kind of like, wow, Jason, maybe you just needed a

Ashley: hug.

Oh, yeah, exactly.

Sidney: That's what I'm saying. I think it was my sister, um, described Pennywise as, uh, what was that creature from Harry Potter where it's like, they turn into the thing you fear?

Ashley: Oh. Uh, I can't lie. I have not seen Harry Potter, uh,

Sidney: totally fine. No judgment.

Ashley: I know. I know what you're talking about.

Sidney: Yeah. So because, because that's kind of what Pennywise is, right? He's just like a mystic character that shows boggart. That's what it's called. Thank you. Yep. But Aaron producer, Aaron coming in with the save boggart. Heck yeah. Um, so yeah, Pennywise is basically a boggart. So he like turns into the thing you fear.

Okay. So this is interesting. Here is the finals of the scariest.

Yeah. Now, they're both clowns. It's Jigsaw versus Pennywise. They kinda look the same, honestly, which I think is a hilarious coincidence.

Ashley: Except, Jigsaw's tiny, remember, he's like, yeah, yeah, Jigsaw's a

Sidney: puppet. Yeah. Pennywise can be, I guess. Yeah. Well, I think I know what you're gonna go with, because this is like what started it all for you.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Am

Ashley: I right? You are right. Pennywise, for sure. Absolutely. Yeah. But, Tim Curry's. Although.

Sidney: Tim, but not. He

Ashley: did a good job. He did a good job. Yeah. But Tim, Tim Curry's like the OG, like, scary, you know.

Sidney: Um, I think, because of how terrified I am. Staring into Pennywise's eyes right now, uh, I think both of us have a lot of respect for how much work it goes into being Jigsaw, how much work it goes into planning all of that stuff, you know, that's, you know, honestly, respects, um, we get it and we see it, we honor it, but Pennywise being the scariest of them all, wow.

Pennywise, here we go. He's the winner.

Ashley: Yay.

Sidney: Pennywise, I'll have nightmares about you tonight.

Well, that was that was horrifying and fun. That was fun.

Ashley: Yeah, definitely.

Sidney: Well, that wraps up the episode. Ashley Young, thank you so much for being on the show. Uh, Anything you want to plug before you go? I know that you're in the Barbie movie.

Ashley: Yeah, uh, yeah, so go see Barbie in theaters, um, this July, uh, and otherwise, um, yeah, you could follow me on my socials, I suppose, uh, OrlandoCyborgAshley, that's me, um, and yeah.

I think that's it really.

Sidney: Who are you in Barbie? What, I mean, what do you play?

Ashley: Uh, I am Barbie. We are all Barbie. Uh, We are all Barbie. In Barbie's world. So yeah, I, I was hired on as a dancer and then kind of like stayed on in Barbie's world. So I am just like part of her world, hanging out, doing random stuff.

I'm many different characters. So it was really fun.

Sidney: I'm gonna definitely, uh, I was gonna see Barbie before, because obviously Yeah. But now I'm gonna see Barbie and be like, Hey, Ashley. Hey. There

Ashley: we go. . Sounds

Sidney: good. Well, yeah. So, uh, Orlando, cyborg Barbie, any final words or final life tips that you can give to anyone that maybe wants to get into scaring or, um, just in general, any mantras that you wanna share with the audience?

I would

Ashley: say if you are looking to get into scare acting, it's one of the most fun things that you can do. It's like the most interesting job. Uh, you can get all of your frustrations out about the people who cut you off in traffic. And, uh, but it is really hard work. I feel like people don't realize that you're working from like three to 3 a.

m. So, but it's really fun. Do it. It'll change your life. You'll meet people that will change your life. And, um, I think it's something you should go for at least once in your life if you're into it.

Sidney: Maybe I'll do it. Well, thank you, Ashley, so much. Thank you so much for being here. Uh, yeah, thank you. I can't wait to see you at Barbie and just, you know, be friends now because, uh, I think I'm going to have to ask you what the next horror movie I watch is.

Ashley: Perfect. That sounds great.

Sidney: All right. Thanks, Ashley. We'll talk soon. Bye. Bye.

Ashley: Thank you.

Sidney: Oh my gosh, what an episode, everyone. That was so much fun to talk to Ashley. I mean, I Like I said at the beginning of the episode, I think I actually do like horror films, which, that's a huge revelation to me.
